Craft Trade/Asbestos Specialist

Job Summary

Position summary:

Lantic is currently recruiting for the position of Craft Trade / Asbestos Specialist located at its Vancouver sugar refinery. The Craft Trade/Asbestos Specialist will work as part of our Craft Trade Maintenance Team. The positions that denote Craft Trades are Pipelagger, Carpenter, Painter, Bricklayer and Sheetmetal.

This full-time permanent position is covered by a union collective agreement that pays $45.20/hour, plus a $2/hour premium for asbestos qualification, with a comprehensive benefit package that includes dental and vision care. Benefit package also includes boot and tool allowance. A pre-employment medical is required. Working conditions are consistent with manufacturing from the raw state to the final product.

Main Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Measure and cut insulation for covering surfaces, using tape measures, handsaws, knives, and scissors.
  • Lead asbestos removal abatement team.
  • Fit insulation around obstructions, and shape insulating materials and protective coverings as required.
  • Determine the amounts and types of insulation needed, and methods of installation, based on factors such as location, surface shape, and equipment use.
  • Install sheet metal around insulated pipes with screws in order to protect the insulation from weather conditions or physical damage.
  • Apply, remove, and repair insulation, thermal and fire, on industrial and domestic equipment, pipes, ductwork, or other mechanical systems such as heat exchangers, tanks, pipework and vessels, to help control noise and maintain temperatures.
  • Select appropriate insulation, thermal and fire, such as mineral wool, fiberglass, foams or other materials based on the heat retaining or excluding characteristics of the material.
  • Cover, seal, or finish insulated surfaces or access holes with covers of metallic or nonmetallic, canvas strips, sealants, tape, cement or asphalt mastic.
  • Working with the craft trades team efficiently on other duties as required.


Qualifications and Experiences Required


  • BCTQ Red Seal certification or equivalent Canadian journeyperson certification with Interprovincial Red Seal.
  • 10 years minimum working in asbestos abatement environment
  • Experience and familiarity with safe working practices in regards operation and maintenance of equipment
  • Commitment to work in a safe and orderly manner (adherence to lock-out-tag-out, confined space, fall protection, arc flash and other applicable regulations and practices).
  • Basic understanding of operational process.
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and punctuality record.
  • Food industry experience is an asset but not essential.
  • Able to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
