Laboratory Manager

Job Summary

Lantic is currently recruiting for the position of Laboratory Manager, located at its Taber Processing Plant. Reporting to the Corporate Director, Quality-Assurance & Environment; the Laboratory Manager is responsible for the management and supervision of the Main Laboratory, acting as a food safety team leader, a member of the HACCP team, and action as the Recall Coordinator. The Laboratory Manager ensures that the process and production is executed in accordance to governmental, legal, and customer standards, as well as to labour, and environmental norms.

Main Responsibilities

  • Maintain, update and expand current food safety systems in place to satisfy FSSC 22000 standards while also maintaining and updating lab procedures;
  • Ensure that the products and the facility requirement are meeting the parameters set by various authorities including FDA, FSMA, & CFIA
  • Providing technical assistance and support on the field of food science, quality assurance and food safety protocols to other departments and personnel
  • Liaison between regulators and company for obtaining permits and documentation, responsible for routine reporting to Alberta Environment Protection which include non-compliance reporting;
  • Ensure year-round supervision of the Product Shipment Quality Control and Quality Assurance, as well as the Process Quality Control during Beet and Juice Campaign; the Lab Data Entry and Report Generation;
  • Supervise Lab personnel in accordance with a Collective Agreement; coordinate lab manpower,
  • Ensure adequate supply of lab reagents, inventory and responsible for ordering lab supplies; calibration, maintenance, and trouble-shooting of lab instruments;
  • Conduct supplier, contractor, and internal GMP audits;
  • Track, investigate, and implement corrective action for all non-conformances;
  • Address complaints from industrial and retail customers and handle customer inquiries as well as their requests;
  • Ensure the orientation, training and coaching of Lab personnel on Lab Safety and Company Safety rules.

Qualifications and Experiences Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Food Science, Food Processing, Food Bio-Chemistry, Food Chemistry, Food Technology or other related Bachelor’s Degree;
  • Canadian Certified HACCP Professional designation(an asset);
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience;
  • Minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience;
  • Experience working in a unionized environment (an asset);
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel & Outlook);
  • Knowledge of programs such as Maximo, Navision, and Kronos(an asset);
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, good conflict resolution and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations, manage stress effectively, effective decision making skills;
  • Ability to influence others and demonstrate good leadership skills;
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment and multi-task;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Planning and management skills.
